Rail trolly

I'm trying to improve the way I split a tractor and have recently seen a system in a Massey Ferguson repair manual.
They called it a rail trolly it looked like it consisted of some bearings mounted to a plate that road on a set of rails.
Does any one have any knowledge of this and what it takes to build.
I'm thinking of using angle iron for rails and some casters for the wheels.

I have always thought that an old pallet jack could be adapted to make one . It even has an inbuilt hydraulic lift .

Here are some photos of the splitting rail that we made some 30 years ago. It has been used on literally dozens of tractors in this time whether it was for splitting between the engine and gearbox, gearbox and centre housing or removal of rear axle housings. The larger mobile stand was made about a year ago to cope with larger tractors. Up until then the rail had been placed on wooden blocks to increase the height and reduce the amount that the screw adjustment was extended.
The rail is made from largely two inch angle iron and braced with an extension rail. The trolleys are made from largely workshop off-cuts and the wheels turned to fit the rails. In terms of safety it is invaluable and it allows the parts of the tractor to be rejoined with an absolute minimum of realigning. Could not manage without it. The photo shows a 4445 split to remove the gearbox.
If you are going to make one you won't regret it.

That looks perfect thanks for the pictures.
What is the width of the rails ? And could you get me a closer look of the wheels of the trolly.
 
What I use is a 17 foot long I-Beam hung in the over head of my shop and have 4 chain hoists mounts to it and 3 are on trolleys so I can hang an engine or what ever and move them around as needed. Right now I have a JD 1020 in my shop doing an engine rebuild and I have it hanging on all 4 hoists right now

Plus the overhead beam is out of the way, not to mention all the other things you can use it for.
 
On this JD 1020 if it had a cab the cab would have had to come off to repair the PTO coupler since I had to split the transmission in 2 parts to get to the coupler

Very true, I have a 24' long I beam 20' up. The rail trolley is really nice if you do continuously do jobs where the tractor needs to be split in more than one spot. David, your rail trolley setup is simple, compact to others I have seen, and it looks really good.
