Sounds like up in the dash 1st and reverse did not stay put and now not lining up, the shaft has to slide through them
with a pin that activates them, don't force it what ever you do. You can take the shift plate off and get a hold of the
hub and move it some and see if it will line up. Should be a grease zerk to get while you are in there.
