230 Diesel Rebuild

Ok I've started to get some of my parts for the rebuild. I got a question. Where is the serial number on this Perkins diesel? I want to make sure I have the right number because I'm finding you need it to order some of the parts. They ask does it end in S or DL something like that. Anyway I found a used bottom cover for $55.00 including shipping that wasn't bad and a lot less than a new one! I'm going to try and braze the back timing cover where the corner is broke off. I have some aluminum welding rods so I might as well try if I screw it up they have one of those used also. I see that complete rebuild kits are fairly reasonable but if I pull the pistons and they along with the sleeves look good would you replace them or reuse them? Again this engine only has a few years on a rebuild but the company did a bad job and the oil pump quit and spun a rod bearing. I'm getting the crank turned and the rod reconditioned if it can be. I don't want to half a@@ do it but I would like to be as frugal as possible with the money. Momma is already mad about it! Thanks.

If you have gone this far with it why take the chance? Pistons and sleeves are not going to be that much more. If the oil pump quit then it's a good bet the liners are toast. Check the cam lobes and lifters out too. Depending on how long it ran without oil it could be not so good. Look at all the rotating pieces that would suffer from lube and heat failure.
