MF Model 66 3 bottom - Need some info

Team Massey,

I picked up a MF Model 66 3 bottom plow this week and did some plowing with it (pics to come when I get time). I do have a few questions about it as this is my first time using a turning plow.

1 - This is a 3 point mounted plow and I would like to know any setup tips you have for getting this setup correctly on my tractor. It did OK for my but I know it can be setup to work better.

2 - A couple of the shins are broken and worn. Also the shares (I think this is what they are called) are really worn down on the points (rounded). I am looking for the part numbers and a good supplier to get these replaced.

3 - Does any one have a manual for it in electronic or paper copy that you would be willing to part with? Found a reproduction on Amazon that is reasonable. Would this have the info that I am looking for?

The pic is of the one I bought.

If you "Feel" under the edge of the Share and feel the FROG or the Bolt Nuts even with the wearing surface, the Shares MUST be replaced.
Get new Shins from Shoup ( Cheapest I have found).

Even if well worn, New Shins will help the plow last longer..

NEVER EVER let that plow get RUSTY...!!

Thanks for the info. I will check that out next time I am at the farm where the plow is.

As to letting it get rusty. The moldboards cleaned up nice while plowing and I coated them with grease when I was done plowing. If there is a better method I am all ears so to speak.

I have an old MF 62 plow, 3x12 and a MF 64 disc plow, I used to use grease on the wings, but it was a pain to apply and if you let the plow set outside over the winter, the grease would come off and the wing would rust.

I now use a plow wing paint, John Deere or caseIH makes a plow wing paint, I normally buy mine at Orschlen's farm supply,

works good, have the wing clean then just spray it on, wings stay black and rust free, as soon as you start plowing the plow wing paint slides right off.

I had trouble using regular spray paint, would not come off fast, so the wing would not shine up.
I do not do much plowing only small gardens spots, etc,

I am no plow expert by a long measure,
but I try to set my plows so they are level front to back and side to side.

only picture I have of my tractor plowing is with this set of MF 64 disc plows.
here are a few pictures, hopefully you can see what I am talking about.

also, when you get new points and other wear parts replaced, the old plow will work much better.

your plow is designed to suck into the ground, you use the draft control to keep the proper depth.

Thanks for the info on using the paint on the plow. I will get those de-greased and painted as the plow will set outside most of the time.

As to the setup I was close. I ran the rear wheels of the tractor up on some 4x4's then set the plow as close to level side to side and front to back as close as I could with the old calibrated eyeball. Next time I will find a good level spot and do what you suggested without using the 4x4's and will have a level on hand. Thanks for that tip. This probably explains why the plow was plowing slightly different depths for each bottom.

I knew I could count on the YT members for some great tips and info. Thanks to everyone. Keep the info coming I am learning a lot.

I am not new to tractors been using them most of my life. I grew up in cow and timber country where there was not a lot of plowing. We used tractors for hay, brush cutting, keeping fields cleared, gardens, etc.

Mostly use one now for maintaining old farm and family land keeping the fields cleared of tall grass and brush.

I am now learning to use a bottom plow for turning under parts of some old fields that have not seen a plow in about 30 years putting in some food plots for deer hunting. I did get the areas turned under and will disc and till with a 3 point tiller in the spring. After adding Lime and Fert. After the prep will use a broadcast spreader to seed some peas, snap beans, oats and soy beans.

Also going to try and bring my Dad's old MF135 diesel home sometime in 2017 to get it back in proper mechanical shape. Doesn't need a lot but could use some attention in a few areas.

I am sure I will have some questions on that too.
