When I pulled the pistons, # 1 & 2 piston looked burnt where the top ring grooves are. There is broken or burned out piece's in the piston. The tops of the pistons look fine. What would cause the piston failure. Dick

You are exactly right. I wish you had to have a prescription to buy the stuff. We get about an engine a month that has been ether bombed, Just finished a DT466E International engine.

Starting fluid will detonate on its own in a engine with at least a 5.0:1 compression ratio. Use too much in a diesel engine which has a compression ratio starting around 16.0:1 compression ratio, and higher = broken pistons, and rings.

I bought. This tractor with a bad engine. Could be starting fluid? I was wondering about injectors, but starting fluid sounds more like the cause I gues. Dick

At least it's a "easy fix" compared to other engines. Wouldn't hurt to have the injectors tested while you have the engine apart. With a bad injector the cylinder wouldn't fire if it was plugged up, or it would smoke if the fuel wasn't sprayed in like it should.
