Mf30b industrial loader with instant reverse

Hi,

I am looking to buy a loader to help our with building a house next year. I have found a mf30b loader in pretty rough shape. The story is that the owner got sick and passed away. Then his son sold the loader to another fellow with a locked up motor from water getting in the exhaust while it sat for a few years. The new own removed the head and freed the engine and had the head magna fluxed and a valve job completed. He has now lost interest in it because he to busy a work. The price is right under a 1000 dollars
I feel pretty confident about getting the engine going again, but I am unsure of the transmission. It has an instant reverse with three pedals on the right side. I am not able to test the function because of the engine being apart. Does anyone have a opinion to offer on the instant reverse transmission and knowledge of the parts availability for these transmissions. The rest of the tractor seems to have good availability. Also if you have ever used a instant reverse tractor was it a good experience or bad?
 
The parts are out there, but who has them, and how much the parts cost is one thing. The good thing about the 30b is that if you can find the "back half" (transmission to rear end) from the 100, and 200 series agricultural tractors that has the AD3.152 Perkins diesel, and put the regular transmission behind the front half of the 30b (engine forward). The MF34a loader it has is well worth over a $1000 alone. The 34a loader was also used on the MF3165 industrial, as well as the MF165, and MF175 agricultural tractors.
 
have an MF20 with the shuttle shift that works great I wouldn't be afraid of buying it
mine has the MF 32 loader on it the 34 was a stronger unit IIRC
the 3 cyl perkins is a strong reliable motor
The MF 20 n 30 were based off of the 135 with a heavier front axle and the shuttle shift trans otherwise the rest of the parts are the same
the 30 is newer than the 20's IIRC
at that price you shouldn't go wrong
I looked at one a cple yrs ago at an auction figured it would go cheap it ran and that's the only thing good I could say about it pos brought 3500
a much nicer one later on without cab brought 3700 which I figure was about right
 
Thanks for the information and opinions. does anyone know if the shuttle shift is the the same as the instant reverse transmission.? The one I am looking at has a torque converter and hydraulic clutches like an automatic transmission. See. The link below for a picture of the pedal assemble on the tractor.

The instant reverse is different than the manual shuttle shift. Some Ford industrial tractors have a similar instant reverse transmission. Running a tractor with the instant reverse takes some time to get used to. Since it has the Perkins you can swap the flywheel, clutch, transmission/rear axle from a agricultural tractor like I suggested earlier should the instant reverse need a lot of costly repairs.
 
No, shuttle shift is a regular manual, clutched 3 speed, with high/low range and forward/reverse shuttle. Instant reverse are pretty tough, but suffer linkage wear, which makes them jumpy moving into forward or reverse. Main part of the fix, as I understand, per Big Dean (longtime Massey mechanic and guru) is new bushings inside the bell housing and requires a split to remedy. Not too hard, beyond the splitting. If the linkage on the outside is loose, then ... Pretty sure the trans parts are available through AGCO, but will be Xpensive, never mind the time to do it. Loader makes it more painful to split. If the tractor is in good condition aside from the engine, it's likely the trans is fine.

Sound good. I think I will offer $800 for it and see how it turns out. The tractor has definitely had some abuse but for the price I guess you would expect a little. Thanks for all your input.
