44 and 44 special

Should be older posts.

Cast iron wheel center, "live pto", disk brakes, and I think improved cultivator lift with positioner.

The 44 could be ordered with cast wheels and "live pto"

Cast wheel centers front and rear like David G said, friction hand throttle, heavier lift cylinder. May or may not have the live PTO/disc brake option, dad has a 44 Special diesel without it, has the shoe brakes. May also have the three point option too.

tha special is a shorter wheel base tractor. it also has steps on the platform. it is a few upgrades that continued with the 444.

Dad's Special has the step, but the wheelbase is the same as the other row crop 33 and 44 models we have. The row crop 30 is shorter though, like some of the standard tread tractors were.

I always look at the transmission cover. The hydraulic lines are set up to send fluid through the cover on a 44 Special but not the 44. There is a small blank plate on the cover with o-ring recesses that can be removed and a remote valve bolted in place to control front loaders, pull behind cylinders, etc.

Special has a longer wheelbase....about 8 inches longer than a 44 standard. Special will have a 4 inch wider front axle than a 44 (standards) along with wider rear rims, 13 inch up to 15 inch, and bigger front tires, 7.5 x 16. Note that a 44 Special diesel will have the 260 engine, 277 diesel came out with the 444. Gas 44 special will have the 277, and extended rear platform. 44 special in the 60000 serial number range, the last year built, will have the trimmed rear fenders like a 444 in the standard series. Specials will gave a raised gear shift pattern with a pointer on the base of the lever for easier gear selection. Many different hydraulic systems, some were common to both, and some only on row crop versions.
