Sounds like you have bad coil. It should not get hot. Did you try starting it after the coil cooled?

Phil, thank you for your response. I did not try it after it cooled. I gave the ignition system a quick once over looking for any broken wires or if the points may have slipped in adjustment and found nothing. I made a jumper wire to run from the battery hot to the coil + side, to eliminate any ignition switch problems that might be there. I noticed every time I put power to the coil it would heat up.
