MF - Turn 'Em Up?????

I read all the time about an IH or JD diesel and someone turning up the injector pump for more hp - sometimes a lot more hp.

Maybe I'm just not looking or seen it, but what about Massey Ferguson tractors? Did folks turn up the pump on the Perkins diesels?

Looking at the specs on an MF175, it is 63 PTO hp. A MF 275 is 67 PTO. Can a 175 be turned up to essentially be a 275 and/or an a 275 be turned up to be a 285? Can a 165 be turned up to be a 175 - where is the line, or do these tractors just not lend themselves to adjusting the pump for more hp like an IH or JD from the day.

Just curius,

Thanks,
Bill

The 165 is a 203 engine, the 175 is a 236 engine and a 275 is the 248 engine. Compare that to Fords with comparable horsepower ratings that used 201, 233 and 256 engines. Allis Chalmers used the Perkins 236 in their 170 and the 248 in their 175 with lower hp ratings than the Masseys with the same engines. You can draw your own conclusions. I think some European models used a 248 with a turbo that put it up to 80 horses or so.

Most MF/Perkins are set close to the smoke limit to begin with. Neighbor has a 180 at 70 HP, and does smoke more under a really heavy load. Some late tractors did have turbos too, AT3.152, AT4.236, AT6.354 come to mind. Most MF/Perkins CAV DPA pumps have the fuel CC setting code on the pump tag, if different from the test plan. Example, 63/800/6/2200. 63 is the delivery at 800 pump RPM on the test bench, 6 is the governor spring location code, 2200 is the engine no load high idle speed, which is 1100 pump speed.

You about need to have a turbo to be able to make any huge gains. JD and IH also had more displacement to work with in most models. Massey usually was on the small side for their engines. My grandfather had an 1100 that had a turbo kit and a few "adjustments". It got a rebuild every winter. Could make it through one year but not two. Parts and labor used to be cheap.

A 165 D will pull a 4 bottom plow all day on less fuel than you use driving to work. More fuel will just mean more smoke, and really not much more power. IMO it is just not worth the aggravation on that tractor, and I really like the 165,175 tractors.
