Massey 175 diesel knocking

Raking hay today and started coming up a field approach and heard a little "foop" like a misfire from the engine and then she started knocking. I love this tractor for haying and need to fix it ASAP. Any ideas where to start? I shut it down right away and only ran it to get it on a trailer for home. Oil looks good. Any help is appreciated.
 
Hopefully it's something simple, like an injector that's stuck open. You can check for that by removing all four injector lines at the injectors with the fuel stop pulled out. Now crank the engine, there should be NO air blowing backwards out the injector fuel inlet. If one DOES blow air/fuel out it's stuck open and needs repair, tips are replaceable IF the body is not worn badly where the needle top hits the body surface. Does the engine have white smoke at idle? Loosen each line nut to see if the smoke clears while running, if it does clear when the fuel is taken away from a given injector that cylinder has compression issues. If there's white smoke on two adjacent cylinders that can mean a blown head gasket between those cylinders.
 
I will definitely check the injectors. It really didn't smoke but it did leak fuel through the exhaust when it was idling a while or not working very hard. I was thinking maybe a valve but injectors never crossed my mind. I will check those first! Thanks for your help!

checked the injectors and no air was coming back. Pulled the valve cover to see if anything looked wrong and it looked like everything was working ok. Of course when I cranked it the started wouldn't disengage and it cranked for a while till I could get the battery cable loose. What do you think I should do next? Pull the pan and check bearings? At this point would it be better to just split it and put the engine on the stand? Thanks for any help!
