MH 44 Starter Question

Hi Everyone,

I have recently started a project on a 1951 Massey Harris 44 Gas tractor that I acquired.

The tractor was converted to 12 volt at some point and that is what I am working with now. I have a question around the starter.

After rebuilding the carb and getting the electric system all fixed up i decided to turn it over. The starter turn the engine over but after about 3 seconds it started to smoke.

I stopped it took the plugs out and tried it to see how strong the starter was and again smoke.

The starter look original which i assume means it was designed for the 6 volt system. At this point I am curious to what I should do.

If i get it rebuilt it will be a 6 volt again and likely wear out. Do i have any other options.

The starter is an Autolite MAX 4080.

Thnaks for any help

Your starter is probably just dragging and needs cleaned up. But it my need rebuilt. All of my "44"s are on 12 volt with the original 6 volt starters and I have never had any trouble with any of them. All of those who say you need a different starter don't know what they are talking about. You can have the original generator converted to 12 volt so you don't have to use an alternator on an old tractor.

Thanks everyone for the information.

Looks like i will take in to see if it needs a rebuild and go from there.
