Alternator conversion

I want to buy a generator to alternator conversion kit for MF202. Would a TO30 kit fit my MF202? There are plenty TO30 kits on eBay but I can't find a source specifically for 202. I
suppose I can get a universal mounting, but I rather buy a complete kit.

Get a 3 wire and not have to worry about revving engine to get it to charge. Simply install common edge plug, loop #2 to output and #1 through diode or indicator light to coil side of switch

Ooops, there it is.

Massey Ferguson(1963) FE-35 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel:
Single wire Alt. purchased off YT site:
Bracket has to be high enough up on Engine as front axel movement/Pivots:
Installation operates perfectly:
Charging Is initiated once engine RPM is anything above IDEL setting on Governor:

Yes that diagram will work just fine. As for the wire from the #1 on the alternator you can hook it to the ignition side of the coil instead of going all the way to the switch. I have found that saves wire and also a lot of times make it so the wires are easier to route

Since a 202 conversion kit is not available, I can make the needed brackets. I was just trying to save time. I found a new 71 Amp Delco on eBay for $57. It's definitely cheaper than buying a kit. Thanks for the suggestion.

Shoot why buy on Flea bay. If you have a local O'Reilly's auto parts store you can buy an alternator made for a 1980 Chev pick up no power any thing no AC for around $45 plus a $10 core if you do not have a core and that is a whole lot cheaper then the flea bay plus you can have it in hand TODAY and they come with a life time warranty to boot

Some recollections from the bunch we converted 30 years ago (all 7 of my early MF s):

The brackets in the photos seem remarkably familiar! They work!

The early delco 3 wire units were 37 amp, and I had most converted at a local shop to low speed self-energizing one-wire setups. That was after I had to find oil pressure activated switches (cheap in surplus Hobbs hour meter kits!) because the diesels don t have key-operated electrical activation. The factory 30 amp ammeters didn t complain overly much at being pinned for a short time after startup.

I seem to recollect something about having to change the alternator pulleys to work with the wider original fan belts.

And there was something about rewiring the ammeter and battery to work with the negative ground output from the alternator.

Ours were all diesels, so the possibility of the ignition coil being polarity-sensitive wasn t a factor.

Good luck - the conversion is very reliable, and cheaper than a single generator overhaul.

What is nice if you have a good O'Reilly's as long as the sticker stays on the alternator they will honor the warranty. I do not have to worry about a recipe for the warranty but I have a dealer account with them

By the time I got your posting the eBay alternator was already on order. Next time. Anyway after battling with Mathews here in NC, I finally got it mounted and running. I love that instant charging. I should have done this long time ago.
I do have one question though. After running a while the alternator gets pretty warm and the pulley is too hot to touch. I don't know if this is normal. The belt has the proper tension. The alt pulley is 2.75" dia. and the crank pulley is about 7". with this ratio the alt is running 3750 rpm with an engine speed of 1500 rpm. The voltage output of 14V regulated is good.
Should I be concerned about the heat or should I change to a bigger alternator pulley?

I purchased a ONE wire Alternator from this site "YTs" that was sold as a Ford 8-N upgrade. Yes I mounted the Alternator on my MF FE 35 Perkins and it operates perfect. Check to verify that the V-BELT you are driving the Alternator is the proper profile for the pulleys and check the tension.
Bob..

Cannot say on your tractor but many tractor use a wider belt then what the alternator is set up to use and if so then the belt is slipping some and slipping causes heat and soon or latter the belt is going to let you down. On many I take the pulley from the generator and install it on the alternator so as to have the correct pulley to match the belt that should be on the tractor for the water pump etc.
