I have a 1973 165 Perkins. It is pouring oil out the front of the engine, from up high. Looks like from behind the water pump. It is also blowing a lot of smoke, out the crank case vent. I hear a slight ticking noise when I start it cold, then it goes away after it warms up. Could a blown head gasket be causing all this? I need to use it a few more times before I take it apart over the winter.

I hope you stopped in time! I didn't and my 188 lunched - scored liners, cracked block between cyls 1 & 2, chipped piston. Luckily I was able to drive it under cover while oil spewed from every opening to the crankcase. I'm regretting not tearing the head off earlier and fixing what was likely a leaking head gasket. Now I have a rebuild or replace decision on my hands.
