Automatic Tractor LIfter Device

Toured the Ferguson tractors at the Republic MO Steam-O-Rama, this weekend, where the feature was Ferguson. One man demonstrated his official, factory [I guess] Ferguson tractor lift device, two simple steel pipe gizmos that lift the tractor right up in the air. The front was so simple I couldn't believe it. The rear device consisted of steel pipes that attach to the lift arms, then fit two U-shape clamps under the axles, and voila' you're up in the air, maybe 6" off the ground. WHAT AN IDEA!!! Question is, why has this idea died? Why does nobody make these anymore?

Hello fbh,
Yes, you are right, Harry Ferguson came up with this idea as part of the "complete farming package" around the late 1940's. It is incredibly simple but limited a little by ground conditions if you have a puncture or need to jack up on an uneven surface out in the field. As to why it did not continue? Well, tractors got bigger and it was frequently more convenient to carry a bottle jack and a block of wood than two frameworks for which there was no real safe place to store them on the tractor. The bottle jack could always be carried on top of the gearbox or tied to the footplate.

My Great Uncle Sam came out of retirement in 1948 and bought an 8N with any equipment he needed. I still have the 8N and the lift frame that came with it. It is missing the chain that runs to the front piece, but everything else is there.
I've never used it but it would be handy if you wanted to change the wheel width setting. The 8n is narrowed up for plowing and works great with a bush hog mower that way. It's also the perfect width for 30 inch rows so I'll probably never use it except maybe to display at the tractor show.

I saw a old youtube video of this lift and it worked great pulling the rear up as you went forward, however they did not show how you got the tractor back down once the rear tires were off the ground?
