Please read my post here about my MF 250 Diesel. Can't get the starter and solenoid to work. I'm stumped!

I am not up on lucus starters but should be the same as delco. So after reading through it looks to me as if you have
two problems, first the battery is to weak in your tractor and second is sounds like the over running clutch on the
bendix is failing. Now I said I am not up on Lucus starters so this is not 100% sure. With the battery to weak it might
have let the over running clutch slip causing the starter to just spin. If I read correctly it does nothing now, I say
put a charger on it or different battery and see what that does.

So these older starters are fairly simple in how they work. Based on the other thread you said you took the old plunger and put it in the new body. The plunger diameter has to be pretty close to the body or you won't generate enough field to pull it all the way back. When the plunger reaches the rear the contacts are closed between the battery and ignition posts. This could be why it now does nothing. As for the motor spinning and no engagement it sounds like the clutch spring is broken and now allowing the gear to be pushed out to the flywheel however the plunger was engaging all the way.
You can take the start and bench test it with a battery and some jumper cables and a small piece of wire. Might give you more insight when you can see what is or isn't working vs just listening. Did this a few times back in the day.
