Massey 265 battery location

I picked up a 77 Massey Ferguson 265 diesel. (I only have experience with Ford 8N and 600 models) The tractor was owned by someone who liked to tinker. I am just wondering where the original battery location was? Both my batteries are in the front. There is an empty area at the rear of the engine bay just in front of the bulkhead. The side covers are off as well. I have some work to do! This forum is awesome. Thanks for any help.

I just picked up a '76 265 myself. Was my uncles who no longer had a need for it. Curious you said "batteries". Mine has a single battery up front behind the grill. Now I'm wondering if I should put in a second in parallel.

I just got a '77 model 275 and it only has one battery in front of the radiator as well. I have lot's of learning to do about Massey's as well, as I have primarily only operated JD and few IH tractors.

Congrats on the 275! Have you noticed any issues with having a single battery? When mine arrived (had it shipped from East TX to Colorado) I noticed it was kinda sluggish to start. But I put a battery charger on it and changed the oil and the past few times I've fired her up its just started right up. I should look up what the original battery sizing was for it to make sure the alternator can keep up.

I too have a lot of learning to do. I haven't been on a tractor in 30 something years... and back then, I can guarantee that I wasn't easy on them (mainly fords).

I like to think of myself as pretty mechanically inclined, so it's exciting!

I know my wife wants me to do a complete restoration on the 265 (well, pretty complete - it still has to do SOME work).

2 batteries would certainly help in the winter, however it's not completely necessary. If you have a big enough battery with lots of cca, you shouldn't have any problems when it's cold out provided you plug it in as well. We've got a 285 and run 2 batteries, but we also have another big tractor that uses one large battery in place of 2 smaller 6 volt batteries in series. Either way works.

No issues with the single battery yet but the battery is new and it has been anything but cold thus far in central Tx.

Ha, that's true. Most of those TX winders are pretty mild. In the Rocky Mountains where I am can be a bit worse, but not like Wisconsin.

Thinking about one of those battery heaters though. The snow days/weeks are the exact times I want to be using the tractor lol
