Rebuilding a A4.318 Perkins in a MF285 and need info.

hi folks,
i'm rebuilding a Mod A4.318, in a MF285 i don't have the serial number in front of me right now but i know it starts with NC299 and had a F at the end.

what i'm running into is this. when we first tore down the engine, we found that the head gasket was blown between #2&3.

the owner decided to do just about a complete rebuild except machine work on block. replaced liners, main bearings, rod bearings, rods, pistons. sent head to machine shop and had a valve job and surface checked. it was flat

when we first got done the engine purred like a kitten, after about 8 hours of run time during a six month period, the owner called me up and said it was knocking.

checked the engine with a stethoscope, and the knock was coming from the middle of the block and not down in the pan.

suspected and found that #3 liner was busted, due to the fact when we first put the liners in one of the flanges/rims broke off.
we used liquid nitrogen to put them on the first time and have done this on many liners and never had a problem.

called the shop where we got the kit for it from and they wanted to say that we got it to cold, but made the parts good.
this time when we put the liners in we used dry ice and a pusher, the liners started and went about half way and stopped and then pushed in very easy the rest of the way.

well when finishing up, added coolant, and had a leak at what was thought to be the water pump gasket, replaced that gasket and refilled, still had the leak. then thought that the little short 90 hose on the water pump clamps weren't tight enough, new clamps and hose, (didn't use factory or a aftermarket one, got a hose with a 90 and cut to fit) any way the leak seem to disappear, and only had a few drops running down the frame. left it over night to see if leak stopped, got in this morining and no more water in bucket, finished up and refilled, had leak again. thought maybe it was from where i had spilled water when refilling. cranked engine up and water running down frame.
got to looking to see where it was coming from found water squirting out behind water pump under the head gasket.

tore down again, and found that the gasket water passage on the injector side that goes over the small water hole that's about a 1/4" in diameter in the block was not completely on the block, it stuck over the edge of the block about a 32nd of a inch. you could see the block edge impression went right across the edge of the hole. looked at the gasket that we had used the first time and seen that we were lucky that one didn't do the same. you could see the impression on the old one was tight on the hole, and there was rust on the gadket that stuck our just about a 1/8 of a inch past the block.

my questions are,
1. has anyone ever ran into this?
2. i know perkins had some issues with the the head gaskets blowing, is this one of those?
3.could this be due to using cheap aftermarket parts? the kits came from Maxiforce.

any help would be appreciated.

(quoted from post at 11:53:59 09/07/16) In reguard to your second question, have the later studs and nuts with the flange been installed on this engine?

there are two studs on the block, front and rear right in the center. and those had lock washers and regular nuts.

i've read that there where several up grades here on this site last night, but no one around here knows what i'm talking about.
i even called Perkins Power Corp, in Orange Park and they said they couldn't tell me with out the whole ser# which i haven't gone and got yet.

Name of thread was MF 285 engine problems

The MF dealers have a service bulletin about the 4.318. You may have better luck contacting a MF dealer, they should know what's needed (very important to have the correct engine serial number when you talk to them).
