3 point Hydraulics question on MF 202

I have an industrial 202 workbull, I think about 1962. I have some additional info now. I drained out the hydro oil which had water in it and filled it with GL1-90.

As of now, when the engine is running, the lift arms go to the top. Makes no difference whether the PTO is engaged or not, or where the position control or draft levers are.

If I push in the clutch, I can push the lift arms down by hand. They don't go down easily but can be pushed down by hand. If I let up on the clutch, they rise to the top again. Again, it makes no difference whether the hand control levers are at the top or bottom of the quadrant. Before I changed the oil, I could stop the rise of the lift arms by leaning on the with my hand. Now I can't stop them by hand.

I've ordered a new safety valve and some new side cover gaskets, so I haven't removed either cover to look in there yet.

I was just wondering if the symptoms seem familiar to anyone and if anyone can venture a guess as to what my problem might be? Any help on this will be appreciated.

Probably be a stuck control valve in the pump, the water in the oil is probably the cause. You will have to drain some oil out to before removing the right had side cover (or you'll make a big mess). Without it running move the draft, and position control levers, and make sure they move on the inside.

The way I read this, I could be wrong, but it sounds like it is doing what it is designed to do. Stomp on the clutch, sit still, it will lower. This is a not an independent pto/hydro, your foot decides whether the pump will work or not, and there is no holding up without pressure, that is a safety feature of these.

I think you should read my post again. I've had an 8N for ten years and I know the lift arms are not supposed to rise unless you use the quadrant lever to make them lift.

The arms will rise regardless of the quadrant lever position if the draft control is set too high, or is it low. I'm sure you've messed with that one too. Mine is generally set just under half way down and the quadrant lever operates as it should.
If it doesn't, you may have a stuck control valve as someone already suggested. It is possible to get at it by removing the side cover but likely easier to remove the top cover. There are two control levers which interact and control the one valve. And if hasn't been serviced in a while it might be wise to do so. Don't forget to clean/replace (leaning toward replace) the pressure relief valve or it could lead to breaking the top cover or the hydraulic cylinder............ask me how I know! :)

I re-read your original post...........sounds like you're going in the right direction!

I actually received some new inspection plate gaskets and a new pressure relief valve from UPS today. Oh yeah, got a new filter also. So, I know it's possible to replace the pressure relief valve in an 8N going in from the side plate and using a stubby 11/16" wrench. Is it possible to replace the valve in the 202 the same way? I just measured the new valve and it takes a 3/4" wrench. I hope I got the correct one.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I haven't done it that way but I'm pretty sure it's possible with the right combination of light, mirror and patience, and yes, stubby wrench would help.
