Dieseltech I know how you feel, after trying to explain this over the phone today I decided to make that picture showing how the no bleed problem gets created.

I've never seen the NAPA / WIX kind of filter on this side of the pond.
How does the WIX seal then, from the outside of the filter?

The NAPA/WIX seals from the outside of the filter the same as the Delphi, Baldwin, etc filters do. The problem with the NAPA/WIX filter is the fuel inlet, it has those 4 inlets that are down in a groove (see top picture). The way the groove is it looks like a seal should go in there (and as you see in the bottom picture the seal fits perfect) so people put a seal into that groove because a seal fits in it which blocks fuel flow through the filter. Wix filters makes filters for NAPA, NAPA is a big parts store with small stores all over place here in the states.

Both filters seal the same way, the top filter lip is sealed by the base groove O ring. Difference is the flow entrance. I've been repairing pumps forty plus years, still sometimes get the complaint the engine won't start with the repaired pump, when I know it works fine from the test bench. Then I ask what brand filters are on the engine, and find the real trouble..
