1957 ferguson distributor issues

I rebuilt the distributor on my 1957
Ferguson to35 with Continental z134 engine.
I thought I used the correct bushing kit.
Now I'm not so sure. Every now and then it
seems my distributor would bind up and be
forced up out of the hole. I thought it was
due to a weak hold down plate but the last
time it happened, I looked in and saw the
cam gear was chipped pretty badly. I just
rebuilt the motor as well last year and now
it seems I have to replace the cam. My
question is what is the proper amount of
play in the distributor.
 
If you can wiggle the distributor shaft side to side a noticeable amount the distributor needs new bushings. The up, and down movement on the distributor shaft I put them at .015" (between the top of the gear to the distributor housing). It should turn nice, and free
