What to do?

I normally post on the red belly board, thats what I collect. My main usin tractor on the farm, is 451 Massey Ferguson. 4wd FEL, With 2500 hours. My dad (bless his heart, he's getting old). Borrowed it one day this week to do some clipping. Managed to knock the oil filter off, and ran it plum dry on oil. He's not even sure how long he ran it. It does run, and doesn't sound like its tappin or knocen. What do you do with it? Keep it and chance it? Sell it , and let people know what happened? Trade it in? I can't decide.

How about.... buy a new filter... pour in some new oil... and see what happens??? I've seen engines seize tight, cool off, get more oil- and run again for years... just don't make a habit of doing this. BTW, some 'right' filters are too long to be safe, shorter ones are less of a hazard in mowing jobs like this... so are old fashioned canisters, pain that they are...

What would it cost to drop the oil pan and inspect the main bearings, the rod bearings and the crankshaft journals?

About 55 cents worth of RTV sealer.
Now, in the start of the post- 'it had not tapping or knocking'... so you put on a new filter and fresh oil and 'now' it is completely shot?? Depends how much ambition you got.
