MF 35-3 point hitch Draft lever and Auxiliary Switch valve

My dad and I recently acquired a 1959 MF 35 - 4 cylinder diesel.

Problem with the Draft and Position levers on the Quadrant. We have the auxiliary valve also in front of the seat. It has two levers and we are using the left one to lift and lower the 3 point hitch. The left lever has a square rod lock rod but the right one does not. The right lever handle is broke off but still enough length to use it. see photo. We were told the right one is for a loader if we desire to get one.

But we cannot get the Quadrant controls to lift or lower the 3 point hitch.

I have been told by my uncle who is a farmer that we should be able to operate the 3 point hitch with the Quadrant Position lever and Draft lever.

But he was not sure what steps to take with the auxiliary valve levers in front of the seat. His tractors are much more modern.

Before I assume the Quadrant Position and Draft levers are broke can someone please help me with the correct steps to take with the auxiliary levers in front of the seat so we can get the 3 point hitch to lift and lower with the Quadrant levers?

To operate the 3 point hitch with the quadrant levers: the left lever on auxiliary valve must be
locked at the back position (toward the seat). To operate a loader or remote
cylinder the left lever must be locked at center position as on your pic.
The right lever is for operate a loader or remote cylinder (single action)

With this setup you can operate 3 point OR remote cylinder(s)
but not both at same time.

We have exactly this setup on 3 of our MF tractors here...still working good.

Thanks very much.

What is the front (away from the seat ) locking position for on the auxiliary left lever?

Also what is meant by Single Action for operating a loader or remote cylinder?

Correct me if am wrong but I assume the Draft is not operating when using the auxiliary lever???? If this is correct then I need to lock the left auxiliary lever towards the seat and then use the Quadrant levers? is this correct?

Also, once I lock the left auxiliary lever towards the seat what positions do the Quadrant levers need to be set at for me to use the Position lever to lift the 3 point hitch? Seems to me that I tried this but had not movement with the Position quadrant lever. Maybe I had the Draft set wrong?

Thanks very much for your time.

Do as Joe said, lock the left lever back for three point use. Make sure you move the DRAFT lever down some toward the center, if it's too high that brings the lift arms up too. When set right you can then control the three point with the position lever. When it's completely up with the position lever you should NOT hear the relief valve blow, and SHOULD be able to lift the arms by hand about two inches. If you DO hear the relief valve blowing move the top position stop bolt forward to limit the lever travel.

After locking the left auxiliary lever back towards the seat. The 3 point hitch lifted all the way up and then it was obvious it was trying to go up higher as it put a load on the engine.

But the Position lever on the right of the seat did nothing even after moving it back and forth to lower it.

Is there something possibly clogged that is not allowing the fluid to get over to the Quadrant controls for the Position lever to work?

And what is the fix for this?

thanks

As usual Dieseltech is right-on !

The draft lever should be in between the two litle triangles exactly over the word DRAFT enbossed on the quadrant.
It is the normal setting (if previous owner(s) did not alter the linkage under the hydraulic cover).

The left lever position farther the seat (if my memory serve me well) was to operate a remote cylinder
with the position control on the quadrant. I am honestly not sure of that. We never used this position
and never seen it used on other tractors in last 50 years.

Single action hydraulic cylinder operates one way with hydraulic pressure it needs a mechanical
pressure to return in its original position. In example a front end loader the gravity (weight on the
loader arms) will push down the cylinder pistons. Double action cylinder is activated by hydraulic pressure
both directions double action loader will lift the front of the tractor by forcing down the cylinders pistons.

I hope my message is understandable because english is not my native language.

Thanks guys for the info.

After using your input and also the great conversation with Jack Wetmore I was able to determine after trying out some things on the tractor today that the linkage for the Quadrant Position lever must be disconnected or broke under the cover.

I guess the next step is to take the cover off and check things out and set to specs as per a manual.

Other then that I am still able to use the 3 point hitch with the left auxiliary lever in front of the seat.

At the same time have the cover off I'm going to replace the boot on the Draft shaft which in itself can be a real pain.
