MF 135 Water Pump

Just got my water pump and put it on. With the flange tight to the block the studs just stick through, not enough to get the lock washers on. When I looked at the old pump, the flange, with the boss around the bolt hole, was right at 1/4 inch thick. The new flange is a tad over 5/8 thick at the boss. It's so thick that my generator bracket won't fit on the stud. Did I get the wrong pump, or is the new casting just thicker? Joe.

Z145 gas. My original order was for part # 830691m91 with pully. They called and didn't have the pump and pulley, so changed order to just pump. Miss placed that receipt. I told them it was the Z145. Looking in the parts, that number says Z134, are they different? Joe.

The water pump for the 134, and 145 Continental are all be the same pump. First time I've ever heard one being too thick at the bolt holes. The numbers on the old pump is probably a Continental casting number. I would call whoever you ordered the pump from.

Just talked ti customer service at YT, they are checking. He said both Z134 and Z145 are the same, also. The flange on the new one is thick enough that my generator bracket won't fit between the pulley. We miked the old pulley when we removed it so we didn't press it on too far. I could probably grind the boss down far enough to make it work. I'll take a couple pics, Joe.

Ok, the old pump measures exactly 1/4 in thick at the bolt hole boss. The new one is almost 1/2 inch thick. So, when I put the pump on the studs just come through, and there is not enough room to put the generator bracket on. The pulley is pushed farther out buy the flange being thicker, so the belt doesn't quite line up. Here's a picture of the new and old pumps. You can see the new black flange is thicker than the old one. The local Massey dealer said he had a pump on the shelf, I'm going to ride up and see how his pump matches up with my ole one, Joe.

Photobucket is killing me. Hopefully here's the picture.

Something odd did happen. When I took the old pump off, I cleaned the block side with Brakeclean and a putty knife. I had it down to shiny metal. Today when I pulled the new pump back off, I had put a thin coat of RTV on the gasket, a thin steel plate came off stuck to my gasket. There was a thin steel plate, almost like a two part gasket still on the block. Now the pump will slide back far enough to get the nuts on the studs. But still not far enough to use the lock washers or get my generator bracket on.

The local Massey dealer said he could get me a rebuild kit with shaft and bearings for $14. Told him to get it, Joe.

New pump probably from India or China, so unfortunately things can be off.

If you measured from the back of the pulley all the way to the gasket surface and used that figure for pressing back on things should line up, regardless of the thicker boss. Anyway, at least you got the pulley off and back on without breakage. :)

Did he tell you how much they get for entire new pump?

The dealer had the same pump I got from YT.
Because the flange is so much thicker, if
you press the pulley back far enough to line
up, you can't get the nuts on or get the
generator bracket on. I'm just going to
rebuild it and use my old housing. As I
mentioned, there was a thin steel plate
behind the gasket. It got me a little more
room, but not enough for washers or bracket.
I'let you know how it goes, Joe.

If that would have been noticed before the pulley was put on those 3 holes could have been spot faced by however much thicker the flange is. I ordered my water pump from that "auction site", forgot who I got it from but it didn't have the extra thick flange (I more than likely bought the cheapest one with, or without shipping cost I could find).

You could have went to any auto parts store and asked for an A1 Cardone 58-425. It's rebuilt pump and it uses the original housing. I just looked at a pic of one.
