Massey 65 enhancements

Just purchased a 1958 Massey 65; sounds good and no smoke. It has never been restored but is pretty straight cosmetically. Goal is to restore it but it will still be a working tractor on our small farm. Looking at electronic ignition for it, promises more HP but how much? And advice and recommendations for HP and performance will be appreciated

not sure if you'll gain hp but it sounds good
in theory they give a hotter spark which gives you more horse power
as for change over I would as the electronic ign is pretty well trouble free and should last for decades
that's worth more than having to replace points and condensers that may or may not work out of the box
and then having to re adjust them all the time
added bonus is electric ign will help even out the timing due to worn distibuter shafts
it's on my to due list for my gas tractors when the points need doing in the future

I'm skeptical of any HP gains too.

But I can tell you that I put it on my MF 35, and it runs noticeably better. I'll never go back to points.

It all depends on how much extra power do you want. Even though I plan on eventually selling my 2135 industrial with the Z134 gas engine I would still like to turbocharge it. With the low compression, 5-8 psi of boost would make a big difference in power.

Switched to electronic ignition on my 65 over 5 years ago. Can't say I noticed any hp gain, but it works so well I've just about forgotten where the distributor is since i put it in. And the tractor is used almost daily.

What is there to buy when you put electronic ignition in- i have a 65 gas & would like to do it ?

If the engine is running good with points you probably won't really notice any real difference in power with the electronic conversion. Besides eliminating the mechanical points, the little bit hotter spark from the electronic conversion helps the spark plugs stay cleaner making them last longer.

For the 2 I did, all I did was buy the electronic ignition. Didn't bother with the coil, and both run great. One was an Oliver 1600, did it over 12 years ago. The other is a Massey 165 w/continental engine. Did it about 5 years ago or so.
