engine stalling

I have a 1958 FE35 with a four cylinder diesel Standard Engine of England. When running for 10-15 minutes, the RPMs will oscillate. After the RPMs ramp up and drop back down 2 to 3 times the engine stops and will not start again. If I let the engine sit for about a week, it will start only to die in the same 10-15 minutes. A mechanic friend thinks fuel filters are plugged but they are new. Only about 20 hours of use.

Had something similar on my 175 diesel. found out all the lines were gunked up from sitting. I had to take a wire through them to even get cleaner to go through them. Funniest thing is it ran for 15-20 minutes when I test drove it but when I picked it up it started having trouble. From the tank to the lift pump was the worst for me. Not sure yours is the same setup. After mine quit I just popped the line off the pump to see if fuel was free flowing and I had nothing. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. We opened the bleeder ports in the Fuel pump and fuel came out after a lot of engine cranking. I will check the Fuel lines like you did. I appreciate your help.

On one of the filter base tops there's a small constant bleed orifice fitting, if I recall might be a banjo type bolt that has a small bleed hole. This line bleeds off any trapped air in the filter, and when it gets plugged the air then will go to the injection pump and stall the engine. Make sure it's open. Also make sure the small supply pump is good on the side of the engine, they can go bad and not supply the system as it should. The check valves inside can fail, then it won't work correctly.
