6V to 12V change over

Hello,
I have 2 MH 44 6V tractors and would like to change them over to 12V.

I have 2 new 12v batteries. I will have to get new 12V lights.

What should I do with the Generator? Do they make a 12V generator? Or should I go with an 12 V Alternator?
Do I have to change out the coil also? Etc.

Does it matter if it is 12V Neg ground or 12V Pos ground?

Thanks

Keith

You will need a 12V battery and bulbs.

A Delco alternator will mount and wire easily, just swap pulleys with the old generator.

The ground orientation needs to match the alternator/generator, so will probably be negative ground.

You can get a Delco internal regulated alternator at any auto parts store. Late 70's to early 80's General Motors vehicle. I usually get one for 83 Suburban, small engine

If you change to alternator you will eliminate generator and especially regulator problems. Alternator will be negative ground.

Either replace coil with direct 12 volt such as NAPA IC 14Sb or add a ballast resistor between coil and ignition switch. With negative ground the -- post on coil goes to distributor

Loop #2 pin of plug to output post of alternator. Wire from output of switch (or + post of coil) to #1 on alternator plug with a diode, indicator light or 10 ohm 10 watt resistor in the wire. Marked band of diode goes toward alternator. Purpose of this device is to insure that the engine shuts down when switch is turned off.

With alternator and battery installed and wiring connected, turn lights/ignition switch on and ammeter should read negative. If positive reverse ammeter leads.

With alternator I would use #10 wire from alternator to ammeter to battery connection at starter solenoid/switch. Also check that wiring harness is in good condition. Replace bare or cracked wiring.

I take the original generator to a local auto electric shop and they replace the fields for 12 volts. Usually cost $65 to $75 dollars. The cost includes new brushes, bearings/ bushings, etc. As stated above, a resistor, and leave everything else as is. I currently have 9 tractors set up like this. Only problem, sometimes, if you have a mag the 12v battery will turn the 6v starter to fast and the impulse will not function as it should. You may have to just tap the starter not hold it on.
