Picked up the 165

Went and picked up the 165 today. First time I had
seen it. Went great until I found out I had left the
controller for the winch. Apparently I am officially
a wussy and old as using a come along for about an
hour was about a killer. Love that winch. It is a
1970 model I think. Might be able to fix the rim.
Engine not stuck and looks pretty good. Bought for
1350 as he thought that is what non running 9ns
went for. Have never bought a 165 but thought ok
and maybe a bit risky. We will see if it was
reasonable or not. Thanks for all the help lately and
opinions welcome.

Yep, looks like my '73 3165. But mine, as an industrial, didn't have multipower. All those dash panels disappear don't they?
That rim is weldable, take it to a shop, or have a tire shop take it off, then bring the rim to a welding shop, then get a new tube. That style of wheel is a pain for all they do. Don't undo the cams, take the lugs off at the hub, and drag the whole deal around with you. Heavy, but better off in the long run.
That is about top end for a non runner in most places- but if the seller thought a non running 9N is worth 1350... he is in the wrong millennium... back in the 80's maybe that much..
Now let's see why it don't run... vertical exhaust pipes make me nervous... David P had to pull rabbits out of hats to cross reference parts for mine- it was hydrolocked like a science fiction movie prop. Cat owns Perkins now, and that can be a problem. But runs like a charm now! You got manuals for it?

By the serial number its a 1970 model year, the ag212 should be able to be converted to diesel with the right parts, or if you find a complete a212 Perkins out of another MF tractor. Engine parts shouldn't be a problem.

Looks better by the minute. All it needs is a bit (lot) of TLC. Love to have the challenge to do it over here but
would prefer it to be an oil-burner. Always interested to see the differences between US and UK spec tractors. One
tip, DON'T try and tow it or turn the engine under power until you know for certain that there is no water or fuel
in the cylinders.

Good info. I was going to pull plugs and then spin it to get everything oiled. A little atf down the holes too. Can you pull start a tractor with mp?

You can't pull start a tractor with multi-power, just get a good battery, and battery charger just in case. After you pull the spark plugs, and rotate the engine over to get anything that maybe in the cylinders out I would do a compression test before trying to get it started. If the compression test comes out good, and if it has a problem not wanting to run right you will at least know the compression is good.

Hi Not a bad looking tractor, as for the rim be prepared to cry when you get the tire off. I have had a few rims that look better than yours as they sit with smaller holes in and nothing showing through the paint anywhere else for rust /corrosion damage.

when the tires off and a guy looks at the corrosion under the tube. Then starts in with the chipping hammer looking for good metal, I have seen them be rotted right through from say 1 oclock position right back round to 12 oclock with the bit the size of 12 -1 without holes in, and not be a repairable rim at all.
Good luck with the rim I think you will need it.
