Picking up a 165

I am picking up this 165 Thursday. It has a bad rim
but the price was reasonable.

I will put it to work with a bush hog.

I think it is a Perkins gas. A couple questions. Can
anyone tell me what size rim I should get? It is a
16.9by 28.

I have not seen it in person just these pics. Taking
a risk I know but such is life. Was told it ran and
worked but bad rim. Any concerns with pulling on
trailer with multi power tranny?
Any comments appreciated. Early or late?

Thanks in advance. Jasin

Looks like an early Perkins gas 4.212 model. 16.9 X 28 tires should be on a 15 inch wide rim, but if none are available the 14 x 28 spin out rim is more common and would work OK..

What did it do? Fall off a foundation?
That ain't a cheap rim. A 14?x28 power adjust rim... might want to weld a patch in the one that's there. Over 400 new.
You better have a wide trailer, cause this will not fit in a 6&1/2 by 16 tandem one. It's kinda heavy too...
but yah, it is a later one from the looks of it- last gassers were '73 I think?

Yeah Rich, except for the fenders and blue and yellow paint- it looks just like my '73 3165... and a Perkins 212 gas yep

What makes you guys say later or earlier? Trying to learn. I am told continental was earlier?

Thanks for responding. Any other observations?

Late 165s had the square rear axles, that's how I could tell. All the first gas tractors did use the Continental G-176. The Perkins gas replaced it. The rarest Continental gas is in the early 175-180 tractors, the G-206. I've only seen one, in a 175 at the MF dealer I worked for years ago..

Yes, but Tony, does your 3165 have the Multi-Power transmission?? That's a big plus for me. I'd want the diesel engine though since I probably have diesel in my veins..

I do not have that yet sorry. I will know Thursday.
Thanks for all of the great info everyone. I will post
follow ups then. Thanks all.

Hi, yes you have round section rear axles as opposed to the later square section ones which mainly had the far more efficient 'wet', oil immersed brakes in the UK and Europe anyway. Your 165 will have 'dry' brakes so be VERY careful until at least you know whether they are working efficiently. If they are worn you may find that they will jam on at the slightest touch. Severe cases will need to reverse the tractor slightly to free them.
Certainly looks like an A4.212 engine with the exhaust on the RHS. We only have the diesel version in the UK.

Why do you want a multipower? Everyone has their own preference but I never used the multipower and would rather be able to pull start it myself.

The multi-power is great, having the extra gears it provides is worth it. With a regular 6 speed at times one gear is too slow while the next gear is too fast for what you are doing.
