Help Identify Massey Ferguson

Ok guys, I hope you can help. When the owners dad tol him he thought it was a 1963 I thought maybe a M35. But according to the pics of the front end it's not a MF35.

On the pic of the dash, there used to be a plate between the proof meter and the amp gauge on the left. There are four little rivet holes. I hope you can help. I'm not buying this thing unless I can identify it.

Could be a '63 or newer, but was built as a 202 or Workbull. most of it is the same as MF35, just heavier- it's an industrial model instead of an ag 35. Parts won't be a problem at all.

Thanks, you nailed it. I finally found pictures to verify it. Now the trouble is that the serial number plate is missing.

How can I find the serial number or what year it is?

Hidden on the gearbox casting , right hand side , behind the loader frame there will be a casting number that will give you the year and month . Roughly behind the ' JP ' on the third last photo .

I did find some casting numbers. On the casting just behind the transmission on the right side

183-253-M4
1128

On the left side of the trans.

182840M2

So what are these supposed to tell me?

Those "usually" are just casting numbers, the 83253M4 casting number is a part number for a housing, but that part number was not used on that model of tractor (the MF casting, and parts number setup is strange).

if the engine has its ID plate and you give me the serial number I might be able to get the year the engine was built and shipped.

The engine plate is there but just no readable.

A photo of the casting number I was refering to . The last digit on the raised area at the bottom shows it to be from 195[u:8df37dec80] 7[/u:8df37dec80] The first two are the day and month respectively .

So from the numbers you have supplied , assuming they are correct it shows that at least that part of the tractor was cast late in 1958 , [first day of the twelfth month 1958] . Of course this might have been changed when repairing the machine at some stage , a high probability in an Industrial machine .

Another version of the MHF casting date .

This is from my tractor and shows 13th of June 1957 .
They are sometimes upside down just to make it that bit harder !

On the distributor does it have a bracket bolted to the engine with a nut/bolt clamp holding the distributor, or is it like a 2 prong fork with just a bolt holding the distributor in the engine. That will narrow down the year it was built a bit.

On the power steering pump can you see a tag on it? if so is it a Cessna (something like Cessna 20190-OBA1B), or is it a Barnes (something like Barnes GG-1160-A-WA). That will also help narrow down the year it was built a bit.

On the steering cylinders on the front axle they look like the ones used after tractor serial number 307459

Thanks guys for all the help but I'm now debating whether or not I want to buy this thing. When I first looked at it, it had a nice set of adjustable forks on the loader. The guy now tells me they don't belong to him and they don't go with the tractor. He said he does have the bucket for it.

He also took all the 3 point lift arms (horizontal and vertical) off the back so he could use them on another tractor. That 3 point stuff alone will run me almost $300 to replace with new.

The power steering just barely works. New steering cylinders are $300 each side and a new pump is $500.

No to mention that the rear hydraulics don't work at all and when I pulled the dip stick the oil was a nice creamy color. Plenty of water in it.

I wanted this tractor since it is 40 horse power and has the high low transmission but I'm thinking that I may have to put too much money into it just to get it working like it should.

Sounds like he's parting it out as it sits, next thing you know all that will be left is one tire. Good luck on what you decide, Joe.

Looks like it's telling you to pass, knock $2000-3000 or so off of his asking price, or continue looking (how much is he trying to get for it). The MF 35, 135, etc all have the high/low transmission, and there are plenty of them still out there.

When I first looked at it he wasn't there, his girlfriend was. It had the forklift front end and the 3 point was complete.

Then I talked to him on the phone and he said he wanted $2000 for it. When I went over next time to have him start it up, then he told me the front forks didn't go with it. The 3 point linkage was all gone and he said the 3 point hydraulics didn't work.

Also found out at that time that the power steering barely worked. If he left that fork lift front end on and put the 3 point parts back on, I still might give him $2000 for it. The engine did start easy and it sounded pretty nice.

I didn't drive it at that time. I was still trying to figure out what exactly it was model and year wise.

I'm in Southern Calif. There are not old tractors sitting on everyone's property out here. This is not farm country.

The one thing that made this tractor more attractive was the fact that if I did buy it, all I would have to do is drive it maybe a half mile to my place.

(quoted from post at 15:33:07 08/01/16) I can see your dilemma, $2000 sounds about right for that one. Since he took somethings off I'd wave $1500 cash at him, cash talks!

I'm going to go by and see him probably tomorrow evening. I'll let you know what happens.

Just one more question. the proof meter has 2100 hours on it. Is this a lot for a 202 of this age? Medium or what?

2100 hours is not bad, but a tractor of that age I think the proof meter probably has been changed at least once (which is not un-common). I had to put a new proof meter on my 135 when I bought it (the one it had quit working).

Yeah, I though of that possibility. I had to put a new one on my 8N when I got it. That reminds me, now I'm curious how many hours I have on it for the ten years. I'll have to check that out tomorrow.

Well, I told the owner I had one offer. I told him $2000 if he left the front forklift setup on it and put the 3 point hitch parts back on it. It also comes with a bucket for that FEL.

I already ordered the service manual and parts manual for it. Got an operators manual also. I have to put the box blade back on my 8N and smooth out some space around one of my storage sheds and move one of my old non running Toyotas to make a place for it next to my 8N, close to electric and air, so I'll be picking it up on Saturday morning.

I'm sure I'll be posting a lot more questions once I get this thing. Meanwhile thanks for all the help so far guys.
