Have power at starter on 202 but will not turn over

Battery is brand new. Has good ground from battery negative.
Solenoid doesn't click. Measuring full voltage at solenoid terminals.
Even tried the old screwdriver across the solenoid terminals trick and nothing........not a sound, zip.

I hate to buy a starter assembly and then find that it's something else.

Had similar issue. Mine was a lucky fix - removed power line to starter, cleaned connection, and started up. Good luck.
 

How long has it been since it was last running? My friend said mine hadn't been started in about 3 years. When they put jumpers on it, he said, it went ziinnngggg, ziinnggg, like the Bendix was gone. I put a new battery and cables on it and hit the key. The plastic cover on the Bendix was cracked so I could see it shoot out. It went "clunk" hitting the flywheel. On about the 3rd try it lined up and spun over easy. I'd try cleaning all connections too. Next, pull the starter and take it to Advanced Auto, and have them test it. They can put it on a machine and see if the Bendix and Solenoid are working. Most of the big chain parts stores will test the starter for free, Joe.
 

Excellent idea, Joe. I'll pull the starter and take it up to Autozone.

It was running up until about 2 months ago. Survived the winter, started right up, but now there's a problem.

Just pulled the starter assembly. Earlier, I said that the started solenoid was quiet, well I would add that if I put my hand on the solenoid I could feel it when I hit the start button, so this means that the starter was getting 13v and the starter switch is functioning.
I am calling this appendage (see photo ) the solenoid......is that it's correct name? It appears that it may be seized ( rusted inside)

I have ordered a new starter, but none of the replacement starters that I have found come with a new solenoid. Will I need to transfer this old solenoid to the new starter? That wouldn't seem to make much sense. Do the new aftermarket starters use a different actuator arrangement?

Don't know what to say here- cept... that ain't a 202 starter. They -atleast the early years, start with a button on the dash. Not a 'key switch to solenoid' at all. That is off a 65 or something... that ain't a 202... not in my book anyway. Is that your problem? The wiring is still for the ol push button? and now something is crossed???
You got a manual?
 
The last year for 202 was 1967, and that starter was used on the 202.
The early production Delco starter used different solenoid, but you can use the late production solenoid to replace it. The late production Delco starter used solenoid 1020320M91 (Delco-Remy #1114289).
 


Thanks ptfarmer, that's what I was looking for.....I'll order one to mate up with the new starter and hopefully I'll be back in business with this combination.

Okay, I received the new starter that was listed everywhere as the aftermarket replacement for my original 202 starter, see image.
Does the new starter still require the solenoid?
I'm hoping the answer is "no"...

The answer is 'no'. Because, yes..... this is an original 202 starter. Now, like I said last week, you got to get a wiring diagram or schematic and figure out if you still have wiring for a button under the dash, in this case, it might be a good thing
 

Hi Tony,

I have a start button already. The wire from the start switch went to a terminal on the solenoid. I believe that wire is ground and that pushing the button "connects" the ground to the starter, so if I now connect that wire to ground it should do the same thing with the new starter.
I have the wiring schematics.......I'll see if I can confirm my speculation above.
