Trying to put engine back in 165?

I pulled the Continental G176 engine out of my 165 with live PTO. Dual Clutch. Got engine back together and bolted up pressure plate and clutch. I tried to install the engine back into the tractor today? Does not want to go the last 2-3 inches. I only spent an hour or so on it, 102 degrees today. I don't have an alignment tool for the clutch but I tried to line it up the best I could. Any ideas? Dick

Do you have a repair manual? The IT manual gives the dimensions of the alignment tool for the 2 stage clutch. A friend of mine with a wood lathe made one from a block of hard wood.

Go to Advanced Auto. They will let you borrow a clutch alignment tool. You put the set on a credit card and when you bring it back they take it off. It has several different tools that fit most all clutch sizes, Joe.

Just went through this on my 35 with dual clutch. Make some exact measurements to know which spline and or pilot bearing is lining up first. The vice grip the pto on both sides so it won't move. Put transmission in tallest gear, 4th high?

Get some longer engine mounting bolts, about 2 inches longer, get engine close, put 4 bolts in to act like long dowels.

As you get close, don't wiggle the crank shaft back and forth to line of the splines. You must turn it slowly in one direction. One spline will mesh, then the pilot bearing, then the other spline. Remember don't wiggle, rotate in one direction slowly.

Oh ya, remember to hold your tongue in a funny way, really helps, george

Also do not try to force it back together in any way. Measure the distance between the bell housing to the back of the engine, make sure the measurement is the exact same from top to bottom, side to side. It doesn't have to be off very much for it not to line up.

An hour? Don't give up yet! It took me and 2 very mechanically inclined friends 3 days to put a 165/MF30 back together. We ended up using a plastic clutch alignment tool which is a disposable thing that came with a GMC pick up clutch kit.
The splines will never line up first 20 tries, and - to have a jack under the engine, and a roller jack under the tranny, carpenter levels, harbor freight inspection camera.... whatever you got for tools, have them handy. People who have never done one, tell ya you are doing it wrong. This ain't a 20 or 35 clutch pack, suppose to just be bigger and heavier, but, there is something cursed in there, that takes too much patience.. I hope you are on a perfectly flat level concrete floor?
And don't be scared to hit the starter or have someone turn the pto shaft back and forth... good luck!!

X2 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Even the most experienced mechanics will have some trouble getting one back together. I have even threatened to haul it to the junk yard before it finally goes back together (don't think the threatening it helps it go back together, but it sure makes me feel better LOL).

I did my 135 last year. I have worked on tractors for several years. I still got frustrated. Called two other mechanics, said some bad words, wiggled it for about 2 hrs. And like magic, it went together.

If everything is lined up inside, put the PTO in gear (engine drive, not ground speed) turn PTO shaft at back of tractor to line splines up on PTO plate.
Apply park brake, put tractor in gear and bar flywheel with screw driver to line up splines on traction plate.
Do this while gently rocking the front half to the back, you will feel the splines engage when they line up.
If this is not working you have the clutch miss aligned, or the wrong replacement plates in the clutch, there is more than one spline option.
