DISTRIBUTOR

I have a Massey Ferguson TO35 and the distributor keeps popping up when trying to start the tractor. The gear on the distributor looks ok to me, Anyone have an idea why this is happening.

No, its on there. The distributor is being forced up so hard it bends the bracket. I have straightened it a couple of times but when I crank the motor it shoves the distributor up and bends it again.

The shaft seems to spin fine and as I said the gear looks pretty good. My son was driving the tractor when it quit running. It was running fine. He thought it ran out of gas. After he fueled it up it wouldn't start and that's when this problem was found.

How do the teeth on the camshaft look, you should be able to see them when the distributor is out of the engine. The bracket on the distributor once it gets bent, and you bend it back to shape the bracket is not as strong as it used to be. The more it gets bent, and you bend it back to shape the easier it wants to bend until it eventually breaks where it gets bent at. Also how good the body of the distributor fit into the block? (loose, can you wobble it around while its in the block)

Not sure how that engine is set up, but if it's like many common engines, the bottom of the distributor shaft engages with and drives the oil pump. If the oil pump is seized up, it will break something or pop the distributor up as yours is doing.

Sometimes a piece of debris will get sucked into the oil pump and lock it up. Even an errant wire bristle from a brush used in the past to clean parts or gasket surfaces can do that.
