Hello everyone, new to forums and tractors.I just picked up a 1960 mf 85 last week off of my dad and have been playing with it on my property. It runs really good and seems like a strong tractor but i have noticed some problems with it.The pto does not seem to work when engaged into engine position. When i put the lever into ground position the pto seems to work, when in neutral postion it seems to turn ever so slightly and is the same way when in engine postion and can be stopped with minium pressure against it.
The other problem i have is when i lift the 3 point up it seems to drift down on its own with a implement on it.Sorry for the long post but im hoping you guys could point me in a starting direction to fix these issues.

Thanks
Jim

I looked at one of those larger MF tractors years ago,
It ran good but the power steering was weak and the lift would hardly lift a plow,

Later a mechanic told me to leave it alone as the hydraulic pump ran the lift, power steering and power brakes,

If the pump is weak none of these systems will work

Your tractor may be different, however it may be the same as the one I looked at and need a new hydraulic pump,

You need to secure a manual for your tractor to be sure,

Thanks Max i will look into getting one.The power steering actually works great although i did blow a seal at the bottom by tierods yesterday.I have been trying to research this tractor and come up with conflicting answers, does anyone know if the mf 85 is a dual clutch or hydraulic clutch pto?

The PTO clutch arrangement on the 85 and Super 90 is unique. They have a hydraulic clutch that can be operated as Independent PTO, but it can also be operated as a 2 stage clutch by means of a valve that is opened when the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

There are a few people here who know those tractors well but are probably busy. They will be here, it just may take a day, or two for them to respond.

How well does the Power Steering work? the return oil from the steering system is used to operate the PTO clutch. Weak or NO PS? Then NO PTO. The three point hydraulic pump is separate, not tied to the PTO at all.

The power steering works great it turns with ease, except i blew out the lower seal yesterday, but the pto didnt work before that.Is there a way to check to see if the pto is recieving oil from the ps pump?

If I recall the PTO circuit pressure is 175-225, is controlled by a valve built into the front transmission cover. The test gauge can be placed in the line where the low oil pressure switch is, remove the switch and install the test gauge. If the pressure is low, and the PS works fine there's also a chance the steel line that feeds the PTO shift valve has popped out of place. Had that happen on a Super 90 years ago. It can be seen through the opening after the Power steering pump and mount plate are removed. It's a long small line with a slight S curve where it slips into the back of the trans front cover. There's also a chance that one of the six PTO brake screws has come out, which also drops the clutch apply pressure as they are in through drilled holes.

Thanks so much Diesel i will look into this,i do have one more question. Is there a specific kinda of gauge i need to use for hydralic testing?,im assuming i cant just use my Automotive gauge on it.
