Massey Harris ammeter problem

Hello
I am working on a Massey Harris 30 6 volt
positive ground with a cut out. When I turn
the lights on ammeter shows discharge. I
have the generator checked twice by a repair
shop and each time the cut out has been
replaced. I have installed a new key switch
because the old one only worked half of the
times tested. I have installed a new correct
three position light switch. I tried a brand
new battery. I replaced the ammeter with one
I knew worked out of a different tractor. I
have made sure the belt is tight. I have
made sure the posts and cables are clean and
tight. I have made sure that the ammeter is
wired correctly because it shows discharge
when tractor isnt running. I have also
rewired the tractor. I have made sure that
the generator, cut out and light switch are
grounded. I have also tested it out with my
multi meter and have 6.25 volts with lights
on and tractor at high idle. I don't know
what else to do and am pulling my hair out.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you for any
help

I have thought of converting it over to twelve volt, but I am kinda a purest I would like to keep it original. I just figure I am doing something wrong and find the solution.

Not unusual to show a discharge at idle with the lights on. Should show positive charge as the engine is revved up and when the lights are turned off. That era generator did not have a high output simply because there is no high electical load on it except for the lights. Ben

Sorry for the late response. I agree that there will be draw, but it is negative 10 amps with the lights on at high idle. There is no change between low or high. I figured that it would draw down then and catch back up. With lights on at the battery posts I still have a reading of 6.25, so in my mind I shouldn't see such a high draw.

Sounds a lot like you are measuring the current out to the lights, rather than into the battery from the generator. How certain are you that the wiring is right?

The owner before me had wired the tractor
with all red wires, making it difficult to
figure out what wire was what. Using the
owners manual wiring digram I rewired it
using correct color wires. I feel pretty
confident that its wired right.

Just thought I would update my post to everyone following this post. I replaced the bulbs with lower candle power and it seemed to do the trick. With the lights on it is just a little over positive when running. Thank you for everybody's help
