mf135 3 cylinder gas pto lever position

I just did an overdue hydraulic oil change on my mf 135, due to an obvious presence of water in the oil. I removed the pto lever, then the cover and flushed the case with diesel. sponged out any residual oil/water mixture and flushed the filter screen and replaced. upon reassembly, I realized that because I removed the lever first, I lost the crucial positioning of the component inside that actually engages the pto. Obviously, I realized my mistake way to late and now fear even starting the tractor because I don't know if that component controlled by the lever is in a position to do absolutely nothing, or be in a position to wreak total chaos on the entire system. I guess my question is, does anybody have any info as to setting the position of the pto lever? And if I have to remove the lift cover to accomplish this? and if I hahave to remove the lift cover, is there anything that I need to be aware of coming apart that I will not be able to get back together? everything I've read on the topic says remove the seat bolts, remove the perimeter bolts and use a crane of some kind due to the weight. But it seems that the leveler mechanism, which is incorporated in the lift cover, must have some kind of connection inside the case.
I feel I may be overthinking it but after painting myself into a corner on the pto lever removal, I don't want to risk any further setbacks. Any help is appreciated.

This picture is on a 65, but it will be very similar...See that gear with the groove? and the leg of the PTO selector? well you just get that leg into the groove!.....I sorta knew this would happen to someone when I took that picture! LOL.......Sam

After you line up the leg to the to the groove, and put the cover back on you can test it by hand. With the engine off shift the pto into the live position, and try to turn the pto out put shaft by hand (you shouldn't be able to turn it). Then put the pto into neutral (you should be able to turn the pto shaft by hand). You can also put it back into the live position, and check it again if you need to.
