Idiot's guide to rebuilding a Perkins ad3.152 engine

My father has a 1967 MF 135 that smokes like crazy even at
idle. I figure an overhaul is likely in order. I'm assuming that
since this is not a modern diesel engine with all sorts of
computers, that it'd be a fairly straight forward, nuts and bolts
project. I've looked around for a step by step manual but I've
not seen one. Is there one out there? Also, I'm not a mechanic
but I've done a fair amount of wrenching in my time. How big
of a project is this? Can it be done by a shade tree mechanic
and a good set of instructions? Thanks.

Hi, it is an easy engine to work on but like with all engines it gets easier with experience. As long as you have basic tools including suitable torque wrenches you should not have any problem. What you will almost certainly need to have access to someone who can do it is to be able to remove the cylinder liners and fit new, grind the crank if necessary and carry out any repairs to the cylinder head that might be needed. There should be manuals available but get the genuine Perkins or MF one if you can.

You have mentioned a lot of smoke. Can you be sure that this is oil smoke. It is not uncommon for the starting aid, thermostart fitted in the inlet manifold to leak and this will cause a lot of smoke. Remove the thermostart and plug the steel pipe. If the heating element inside it is wet this may be the cause of your problem.

Thanks for the reply. I had considered the idea that it was the wrong diagnosis and I'd planned the wrong treatment. I guess step one is to get a "real" mechanic to tell me it needs an overhaul. I'll keep looking for a manual and see if I can find somebody to look it over. No reason to overhaul if it's a minor issue that still be there after the overhaul.

Wow! Thanks. That looks helpful. I'll read over what you sent and see if it makes sense on my level. I do a lot of work on my Harley, but the Harley service manual is so step-by-step that my wife could probably do as well as I do. I bought a manual for my 2004 John Deere Buck 4 wheeler and couldn't follow any of the steps or pictures to fix the front part of the 4wd. I had to take it to the dealer for repair. Technical writing is a skill and you've got to know where your audience is starting. Harley assumes you're an idiot. JD assumes you're a mechanic. Thanks again.

Get on you tube and search for this engine, smoke, rebuilds, whatever they have on the search results. See if one of them has your'ses 'symptoms'?
I must agree with David, who is the final word on these things- finding out exactly what is causing the trouble before a tear down if at all possible, cause you don't want to open a can of worms if you don't have to.. smoke could likely be fuel system.. what does it smell like?

You can also get the MF shop manuals directly from AGCO http://www.agcopubs.com/

You also need to find out if your tractor has the starting aid as not all the ad3.152's had it. I have never run across one that had the starting aid (or needed it). You could have a bad injector(s), bad oil rings on the pistons, or both. A shop that works on diesel injection should be able to bench test the injectors to see if they working properly.

service manual MF 35

when I got my MF 20 (industrial ver of 135) with the ad3 152 it smoked a lot
the oil was black and sooty looking
I did an oil change using 15-40 Casterol GTX and 1/2 bottle Lucas oil treatment
did it again after ten hrs
and then again at 20 hr
by the time I got it up to the next 20 hr mark and changed it again
it had stopped smoking and the oil came out almost as clean as it went in
now I change it every 50 hrs using GTX and 1/4 jug of lucus and it hasn't needed any oil added between changes and doesn't smoke unless I load it up with the throttle then it's cple puffs of black diesel smoke not oil
and the oil is still mostly amber in color instaed of black between oil changes
I may change my oil more than I should but it's a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild
works for me

check to see if it is pressurising the crank case by pulling the dipstick and seeing if there is any oil spitting out....these engines need to be worked hard to stop them glazing the bores...maybe a day on a heavy disc with the engine labouring will help....No diesel engine like gentle treatment!...........Sam

That may be an issue. It really hasn't done any hard work In years. He got a bigger JD with a cab and air and this tractor went to light duty.
