MF 135 Steering Box Material

I am helping a friend work on a 1974 135 Deluxe with power steering. It had a failure in the area where the power assist rack engages the sector gear. The end of the guide that holds the rack engaged with the sector broke off and became lodged between the rack and steering housing. It bent the upper end of the housing and broke the two countersunk 3/8" cap screws in the upper end of the housing.

One question that I have: Is the steering gear housing made of cast iron, malleable iron, cast steel? Is there even such a thing as cast steel? The fact that the housing bent up and did not break makes me think it is not cast iron. It needs to be worked back down level with the rest of the machined surface and I am wondering what would be the best method to use. The casting is only 1/4" or less in thickness between the holes where it is bent and I do not want to break it trying to to get it back into shape.

This is a case where a picture is worth all of my words and I will try to add photos in the next day or so. If you have worked on a 135 with power steering you maybe know the part of the housing I am talking about.

Thanks,
Garry

No mater what you do at least check the PS pump relief valve pressure. If it's too high it can wreck a good steering box. Saw one ruined on a 35 once because of the valve.
