Bad engine knocking

I have a 1972 MF with a Perkins AG3-152 (gas) engine that has developed a bad knocking at the rear of the engine. It changes with the
engine speed and gets louder under a load. I've parked it until I can figure out what the problem is. Imappreciate any advice on 1) what is the
most likely problem and 2) how to properly diagnose and fix it myself. Thanks!

rich two quick test 1 short out each plug wire at a time if knock quiets that is bad cyl.2 crack throttle open short burst if knock is much louder( rod bearing ) the first would be piston .traper
