How to remove sleeves on 3 cyl Perkins

The CORRECT size puller plate is needed along with a good heavy puller, either mechanical or hydraulic. Service replacement sleeves usually pull easier than the original sleeves do. When the block is on an engine stand I've placed four or five arc weld beads on the sleeve bore, stopping about one inch from the top and bottom. When it all cools down the sleeve shrinks a bit, making pulling easier. Have to be careful NOT burning through the sleeve into the block though..

I have replaced the sleeves in several Perkins 3 cylinder Diesels with no difficulty....possibly I was lucky?

Here is the puller drawings as available off the Internet:

I used a 3/4" grade 8 puller rod and not the 5/8" as per the drawing. I also utilized a HYDRAULIC RAM with a machined through bore (ram had a 1 Inch centre bore )so that the puller rod passed through the Ram. A bridge was fabricated from a piece of pipe with windows cut into pipe to verify movement of sleeve. I recall that I placed a piece of thin sheet metal between the puller and the top of the engine block.

I have never welded the Inside of the sleeve, but I would if I had to. I know of Mechanics who use this method, always with success.

I did not use this print, as I had a neighbour lend me an old sleeve to obtain the required measurements.

i use a welder and pull a arc the full length of the sleeve in 3 or 4 spots DO NOT BURN TROUGH to put in i freeze them over night and work FAST to put them in before they warm up.
