Need help troubleshooting Massey Ferguson 253 Tractor

I was spreading crushed concrete and my 1995 Massey Ferguson 253 began losing power and generating a lot of black smoke. It did not die but the engine began bogging down therefore I put it in the barn and shut it down. Any ideas about what might be the problem?

Start with the simple things first. Heavy black smoke can be caused by an air blockage or restriction. Maybe Mr. mouse or squirrel has been busy blocking the air intake somewhere..

Not sure if your machine is an Italian or an English build 253, but both should be equipped with a thermostart fitted to the intake manifold. This is a cold start aid and can fail from time to time. When they do, occasionally they will "flood" the intake manifold with fuel.
To check, remove and block off the fuel supply line to the thermostart and run the engine. If the smoke clears, you have found your problem,
hope this helps, Evan.
