Grandson just bought a 195? Massey Harris 44 Questions

He just bought it for 900.00 and is wondering about the hydraulic system. The hydraulic reservoir was empty and the guy he bought it off of said only put fluid in if your going to use the system. On the back are two hoses with Pioneer fittings. I don't feel running the pump dry is a good idea? I also don't think leaving the two hoses not hooked up is a good idea. I was thinking he needs to 'union' then two hoses together. Don't know much about tractors so call me a newbie  Thanks for any help and suggestions !!!

Those hoses should be hooked to a spool valve of some sort. Pump may already damaged if it's been run like that very long. Tractor has an open center system, most pump trouble was the shaft seal leaking oil into the crankcase. Since there were so many 44s made it should not be hard to find a good used one. If the hydraulics will never be used I'd pull the pump and make a cover plate. If it's going to be run as is, you're right, at least hook the hose ends together.

Good news. The pump is still working. We filled up the tank and hooked up a log splitter. Worked like a champ. Now we need to figure a way to hook the two lines together. Thanks

Can you reverse the male/female ends on the hoses on one side? That would give you a male/female on the tractor, and the same on the splitter - so you can connect both tractor hoses (and splitter hoses) together when not in use.

Thanks you Jack. Why didn't I think of this

Good replies;make sure you get the proper gearshift boot or water will get into the
Trans. A proper control valve plus female couplers on the tractor will allow it's use
on most hydraulic equipment. Be aware those are low pressure hydraulic pumps. Those
were a pretty good tractor in their day. Ben
