Fuel Gauge ohm range 1964 Stewart Warner

Does anyone know the range on the older SW fuel gauges? I'm trying to replace the sender but keep my working original gauge and have found senders with different range sets. At 30-65 bux a pop I'd like to do this only once. Thanks.

Hello Andrew

Go to Tank Inc. web site. I think you will find the information you need. Lots of good information about sending unit.
Good Luck Lance

Well, that was a good lead and there is lots of info from the web site. The guy who started it seems to know how to build any type of tank but, most of what I've found there and other sites list how to find the range of the sender which in my case is n/a. I have the working gauge but not the sender. I tried to use a 2003 chevy rheostat with my 1964 Stewart Warner gauge but it goes to full. I tried another gauge with the same result, neither gauge pegged immediately but a slow climb to the full mark on both. I'm thinking the range is too high but without the working sender I've no way to get this reading. Any of this make sense?

Stewart Warner used 3 different ohm ranges that I know of.
240 ohms empty, 33 ohms full
0 ohms empty, 90 ohms full
73 ohms empty, 10 ohms full

Could you post a picture of the gauge you have?

ptfarmer, I don't know what happened but I did post a pic and return message this morn. I'll do it again but what I noticed after taking the pic is that the ohm range is on the face of the gauge. 30-240. The closest I could find is a 33-240 Stewart Warner, I assume it'll work.

I replaced the gauge set on my 1964 Super 90, with an aftermarket set that used the existing sending unit. The info with the gauges lists SW gauges to have 240 ohm empty and 33 full. The gauges read properly.

Thank you Jim, the fuel gauge is the last one that needs to work as all the others are good. I've taken all of them apart and cleaned them. I'd bought a replacement for the amp gauge and now cannot find the original but have bought an old Stewart Warner with the same style bezel and hope it is functional. There is an old MF50 parked a few miles from my house and I jumped the fence for a few pics. While happy to not have been shot at I would like to talk to the owner about the tractor. It hasn't moved in years and seems to be yard art. My tractor is a work horse and fully functional but had a half done paint job when I bought it. I want to make it purdy.

Another question, I bought two fuel filters for the diesel and they came in today. I installed the first stage can type cartridge with the glass bowl and moved to the 2nd stage filter that feeds directly to the pump and injectors. It was not the pleated paper type spec'd on this site. It is a can type cartridge much like the first stage but without the bowl. Can I use the same can cartridge on both 1st and 2nd stage filters?

Your tractor being a 1964 year model it should use the same fuel filter (part number 1851890M1) for both, they can look a little different internally depending on the brand of filter.

Thanks again ptfarmer. Disappointing news. The sender for the fuel tank arrived today. A quick test seems to indicate the original gauge is faulty. It does move but goes straight to full as before. I'd opened it up and cleaned the sweep fields, the windings all looked fine so it was reassembled. The new sender is a Stewart Warner and is rated at the same ohms as the gauge. With no visible damage I really thought it would work. I would like to repair it if possible or get an exact replacement but haven't found either solution yet. It does have life as it will move. Any ideas? Thanks.

I did find Bob's, he has a gadget that may work but it is pricey. I'll check Summit, perhaps they have one that I can swap faces on. The original sender is wire wound and the new is circuit board, I believe this is the problem. Cost may not be worth the end result but I like original stuff.
I very much appreciate all the info I've been privy to from you all.

I gave in. Bosch had a fuel gauge that was a fairly close match and the same ohm range. The sender did not work with the original gauge and I still think it is because of the wire windings but end result is a fuel gauge that does work. I am keeping the original parts, may be useful some day. Thank you all for the help, I will be back.
