Does anyone know on a perkins 3 cylinder, what would cause it to go through a coil in a couple of hours? I was told to use one with an internal resistor. I just bought the tractor. it had a replacement coil on it. It failed with in a couple hours. I replaced it and the same thing happened again.

If you are burning out a coil that quickly I would guess that you have a 12v electrical system and are using the wrong coil or you have omitted the ballast resistor that goes with a 6 V coil when used on a 12v system. Check the resistance of the primary side of the coil. If it is 3.2 ohms+/- than it is a 12V oil. If it is a 6V coil, the primary resistance is 1.6 ohms +/-.

Thanks for the reply. It is a 12 volt system with a one wire alternator. The coil I just put on is a 12 volt with an internal resistor

I would put a volt gauge on it when you get it running to see if it's not overcharging, or have the alternator checked. I have seen alternators that didn't put out enough voltage, or too much voltage.
