MF 85 steering leak

Hi all. Has any one got any suggestions? My 85 will leak hydraulic oil from the power steering (quite a bit) when you first start it up. If you jig the wheel back and forth a couple of times, at first you have no power steering. Then it comes back and the leak stops. You can run it for hours or minutes with no leak, but as soon as you shut it off and start it again you go through the same thing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

not really sure where the leak is coming from but it is running down through the steering box. It is hydraulic oil I assume it's somewhere internal from the steering pistons or control valve. there doesn't seem to be any obvious external leak on the valve

The entire steering cylinder...(upright housing ahead of your Radiator) is full of hydraulic oil. there is a seal at the very bottom, that holds all this oil from leaking out. it is located just above your tie rods, by your front wheel pivot. if it is bad it will leak onto your front axle.
if you have a leak higher up (which I assume from your description) you may have a gasket or seal leaking. Take the top cover off and see if it is full of oil, after letting it sit for a while, and leaking.
judging by your description....the oil is leaking out of the top valve, causing no steering, until oil gets pumped up from the power steering pump, allowing the oil to turn the wheels again. I would look closely at the seal that surrounds the shaft coming out of the back of the top valve....connected to the steering shaft, going to the steering wheel. There is also a gasket on the front of this valve.
Another possibility is an internal seal under the valve assembly....which should not show up as a external leak, but could cause the oil loss until the steering works again.
Hope this helps, Wayne

Thanks Wayne I will look into those. The odd thing is how the leak will stop once the wheel is turned back and forth
