Perkins gas

We have a 1968 MF 150 powered by a 3
cylinder Perkins gasoline motor. I've
followed this forum for a while now and
don't hear much about them. It's always a
diesel or continental gas. Are there fewer
of the Perkins gas models? Everyone wants
a diesel but I've ran one quite a bit but
on a 6 ft bush hog it can't hang with the
gasser in heavy brush and grass. Seems like
the diesel is short on power in all
applications. Less maintenance though.
Just looking for opinions on gas vs diesel.
I'm a gas fan on the smaller tractors
regardless of brand

MF used the Perkins AG3.152, AG4.212, and AG4.236 in some models. I have the AG3.152 in my forklift, while it does OK I would prefer diesel. My guess is the diesels you have been around may have issues. The MF dealer I worked for only sold one Perkins gas 165, and another neighbor at the time had a 180 with the Perkins gas. The Perkins diesels were much more popular in this area than gas tractors.

The Perkins 3 cylinder diesel you have been using must need a rebuild, or something. The diesel will work circles around a gasser, not to mention use a lot less fuel than the gasser. The 3 cylinder Perkins gas is a just converted diesel to run gas. The Perkins gas, and diesel share a lot of the same parts. My brother has a 150 diesel, and he decided to try his Hesston 560 round bailer behind it. It makes a 5' wide round bale, and his 150 can make up to a 4 1/2' diameter bale (but its working hard at a 4 1/2' bale), I'd bet the 3 cylinder gasser couldn't do that. The 560 baler needs a minimum of 65hp to make a 6' diameter round bale.

Two numbers. I own two tractors, a Farmall H gas, 152 cubic inch displacement, and a MASSEY 240-S Perkins diesel 152 cid displacement. Same displacement. Identical. I know age enters this, the Farmall is 1950, the Massey is 1997, I think. Point being Farmall is rated 24 HP, Massey is rated twice that at 48 HP.

I agree there is issues with you Perkins diesel as it has to be the most gutsy tractor engine ever!.......Farmers here even worked them on silage choppers for years.....And they run on diesel fumes!......Sam

Indeed!

I own a Massey Ferguson 35 X "1963" 3 cylinder Perkins Diesel. There are no less than five more of these little beasts with in a 10 mile radius of our home and no one will sell theirs!

Bob..
