Mf50 backhoe questions and z134

Bought what I believe to be a 50 that has a hole in
the block and is a z134 . I am going to put a new
engine in it but am wondering if upgrading to a z145
would be a bad idea? Are they interchangeable
and what else like carb would be needed?

If a bad idea does anyone have a good block and
crank in the Omaha ne area? Thanks for any help
or comments. Criticisms are welcome.

Try fitting a Perkins 3 cylinder diesel....I'm nearly sure it will work? But I stand to be corrected...front cradle on an MF 35 is the same for both engines and the clutch housing is standard on most MFs.....Fitting the tank and rad will maybe give problems so look out for the complete set up from a similar digger that maybe is being dismantled because of gearbox issues?.....Sam

The backhoe and loader is a parsons conversion it
looks close but the 20c is a z145 and this is a z134
unless switched which I am sure happens.

I guess it probably doesn't matter. Just curious.

Thanks for replying. Not many comments so presume not many out there.

There should be a plate either on the dash, or underneath the battery in-front of the steering, it should also have the model number on it also. The industrial MF's are pretty much the same as their farm tractors, except for what they change for industrial uses. Samm40 is correct that the AD3.152 Perkins diesel engine will bolt directly in place of the Continental Z134 - Z145 gas engine. You would need the right flywheel for the diesel that would work with your clutch (or torque converter which some had). The Perkins AD3.152 3 cylinder diesel is very fuel efficient engine compared to the Continental Z series gas engine, and is built much better than the Continental engine.

The Z134, and Z145 are pretty much identical to each other so the Z145 can easily be swapped out for a Z134 or vice versa.

Great info. Thank you. I will keep my eye out for a
Perkins but odds are I will end up with a z134.
Looking on Craigslist it appears that the 134 might
be a little more common and inexpensive. My goal
is to end up with a nice backhoe just to keep around
our land. Thanks again both of you for the help.

Jason.

Thanks again for all of your help. I watched your
video which was neat. That is a nice tractor. It
seems like a 134 ci engine would not power much
but it is not a monster backhoe. I will probably try
to get a z134 as it would be the path of least
resistance.

For your own personal use it should do just fine. My 2135 was yellow, but I painted it in ag colors. I would love to find a old MF backhoe like the one you have, and paint it in the ag colors.

My 2135 industrial the day I bought it.
