My 285 is due for an overhaul , using too much oil , After I overhaul this 318 perkins can I or should I bump it up to about 90 hp from it's original 81 or am I asking for trouble? Thanks.

You would be asking for head gasket trouble on an engine that barely holds now. I'd leave the fuel setting stock. When you get it apart you might just need rings, that's what my brother's 1085 needed when it started drinking oil. Pistons and sleeves were fine, but the oil rings were shot.

As Dieseltech said this engine is right on the edge. I would only use a Perkins head gasket. You might also look into the updated head studs if this engine has never been overhauled.
Good Luck Lance
