Just realized... my MF 65 has multi power

So it has just been brought to my attention that my diesel 1964 MF 65 has multi power, making it a 12 speed tranny. The thing is, the control for it has been taken off. I believe I can see the little rod coming out of the trans housing that is supposed to control it. I can wiggle the little row around and pick it up and down. So My question is, is it likely that this has failed, so I should not bother messing with it? Or is it the rediculus owner however many years ago took this off along with so many other parts? driving it before I would sometimes feel it suddenly slow down, and then suddenly speed up again. also, if there's a possibility it's still working, where could I get the parts for the controller/switch for it?

Chances are it doesn't work if someone unhooked it. Be careful because its probably stuck in low which means it will freewheel on hills. That rod should be down for high and up for low. There's not really a lot of travel in that rod to shift it, maybe half an inch. I don't think I have a spare set of linkages around here but I'll try to double check tomorrow.

my neighbor bought a 175 MF, it had the multi-power slot very cleverly covered.

that tractor was dangerous to drive, as it would free wheel and had almost no brakes.
apparently when multi-power fails all you have is the low range, with no motor braking or at least that is what his tractor had.

he sold it, was kind of rough looking old tractor, did not want to put the kind of money into it to fix the multi-power.

be careful with it, I would not let kids drive it, unless the brakes are in top condition,
just my humble opinion,

Try it in high first and see if it works, rod down like Brendon said. If you have engine braking down hill it's working, just needs the linkage replaced. If no change it probably needs a lot more internal work..

Massey Fergusons usually do not come with brakes, At least every one I ever owned didn't. Those two pedals on the right hand side are just for looks. I think they must of been a dealer installed option! To stop them just drop whatever implement you have hooked on at the time thus creating an Anchor effect. Just look at the old MF logo, it has a small tractor hooked to a ferguson two bottom plow, Makes an excellent Anchor!

Or you can do something like this!

240 was like that but one wheel would lock solid instantly when you pushed the brake pedal, the other did nothing. Was dry drum brakes, had the drum off twice and scuffed the shoes and then burnished them in. At least it will slow both wheels and stop you in a straight line now. Can lock both up on pavement, but one still locks before the other will.

Every Massey Ferguson left the factory with brakes.....but then it was up to the owner to service, adjust and look after the brakes....If they failed to do this, then the brakes also failed....just like every other vehicle!......Sam
