Going to look at a 180 and know nothing about Massey Ferguson. What should I be looking for? How do I know the Multi-Power works OK? Is there any "cold weather" starting assist? Does it have a 2 stage clutch for the PTO? Any way to check if that is working OK? I see where the hydraulic pump only puts out 8 GPM, is that a weak spot?

Thanks,

Bill

If it has Multi-Power you should feel it speed up when shifted from lo to hi, and when in hi it will have engine braking going down hill. It will free wheel-coast in lo. No cold weather aids, but it may have a block heater next to the starter. PTO can be either two stage clutch or independent hydraulic PTO depending on how the dealer ordered it. Only two stage can have ground speed PTO also. Depends on which pump you are talking about, three point or the auxiliary pump. Dad's 180 has a loader on the auxiliary pump and works fine, believe it's 12 GPM. The three point might be 8 GPM. Testing my memory from my years at the MF dealer long ago..

To check the MP I'd drive it up a decent hill and push in the clutch to see if it rolls backwards. It shouldn't. Also if the MP doesn't work I'd check to make sure the outlets work. They run off the same auxiliary pump.

Thank you for the remarks, in the meantime I have found a 175 too. Sounds as if the engines are about the same but the 180 rears are 36 or 38 inch while the 175 rears are 28 inch and the 180 frame is bigger, so the 175 has a much lower profile. Is that about the only difference?
