Perkins diesel. Tach isn't working. Took it loose from the back of cam shaft area. End of the cable looks square enough. Put a drill on the cable and the tach seems to work fine. What else can it be?

What does the end actually go in, the cam shaft? Is that a bearing holder that the cable goes in with the 4 bolts?

Had similar problem on ours, I believe there was an extension inside housing that connected between cable and cam or whatever and that needed replacing. IIRC, there was some longitudinal play on that
extension, that when it was pushed in too far, would allow extension shaft to move past the square drive portion and allow it to slip (in effect, put drive into neutral). New one I ordered was smaller size cross-
section, so had machinest refabricate it, or, maybe had him refab old one. Now all works well again. This was on an industrial and I sure remember how it was a bugger to get to. Piece was about an 11/2 -2' long.
